Medical Association of Atlanta Names Dr. Cody McClatchey as President

ATLANTA, July 15, 2024 -- Dr. Cody McClatchey, a Co-Founder and current internal medicine specialist at Piedmont Internal Medicine, was installed as President of the Medical Association of Atlanta (MAA) for 2024 – 2025 at the MAA Summer Gala on July 13, 2024.

Established in 1854, the MAA has approximately 2,000 members and is the largest county medical society in Georgia. Dr. McClatchey will succeed Dr. John A. Johnson, the current Chief Medical Officer for GEHA Health and the former owner of an Internal Medicine practice in Douglasville, Georgia.

Dr. McClatchey is a native of Atlanta and son, first cousin, great-nephew, and great-grandson of physicians. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history from Duke University, he attended Emory University School of Medicine. He then completed residency in internal medicine at Wake Forest University. He has practiced internal medicine in Atlanta for 25 years. After working at Piedmont Physicians for 15 years, he co-founded Piedmont Internal Medicine, where he currently practices.

At Piedmont Healthcare he has served on the Board of Directors of The Piedmont Clinic, Piedmont Medical Care Corporation, and the Piedmont Healthcare Foundation. He was appointed by the former Piedmont Healthcare CEO as a member of his Physician Leadership Cabinet for three years to advise the CEO and Corporate Officers of Piedmont Healthcare on long-term strategy. He currently serves on The Piedmont Clinic Primary Care Clinical Governance Council and chairs its Diabetes Taskforce, whose primary functions are to improve the quality of care across Piedmont’s Clinically Integrated Network.

He served on the Governor’s Advisory Council of the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Physicians, chairing the Health and Public Policy Committee for five years. In this role he advised and lobbied at state and federal levels on policy issues affecting public health and medical practice.

Dr. McClatchey has served on the Board of Directors of MAA since 2013, and on its Executive Committee since 2022. He has represented MAA at the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) House of Delegates since 2013. He graduated in the third class of the MAG Georgia Physician Leadership Academy and has served on the MAG Board of Directors since 2018.

Dr. McClatchey’s endeavors have been made possible by his lovely wife, Missy, of 28 years. They have enjoyed raising their two daughters Caroline and Hadley in Atlanta. His professional life has been focused on all areas that affect patient care, including practicing medicine full time, advocacy at state and federal levels, and involvement at his affiliated community hospitals. Under Cody’s leadership, MAA will further its efforts to increase membership, improve the quality of and access to care for all Georgians, and improve the practice environment for physicians.

Dr. McClatchey will be joined on next year’s Executive Committee by Dr. Carmen Kavali (Monarch Plastic Surgery and Skin Renewal Center), named President-Elect, Dr. Shamie Das (Emory Healthcare) named Treasurer, and Dr. Anna Skold (The Southeast Permanente Medical Group) named Secretary. Dr. Johnson will continue to serve on the Executive Committee in a Board Chair capacity.

In addition to these positions, the MAA has added five new board members for 2024 – 2025. Dr. Christopher McAdams (Will o' the Wisp Consulting Radiologists, LLC), Dr. Tanna Lim (Northside Hospital), Dr. Jacob Varghese (The Southeast Permanente Medical Group), Dr. Penny Castellano (Emory Healthcare), and Dr. Archie Roberts (Peachtree Women’s Specialists) have agreed to serve on the board.
