There are now 13 different vaccines recommended for adults by ACIP, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.  Each year, thousands of adult Americans get sick or die from vaccine-preventable diseases.  Make sure you and your loved ones are not part of those statistics.

The new 2017 ACIP Adult Immunization has been released.  It’s published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.  Download a copy at: http://annals.org/aim/article/doi/10.7326/M16-2936  Vaccination coverage is update in the 2017 Adult Vaccination Schedule.  Here’s the bad news.  Vaccination coverage rates for adults are abysmal.  Too many people are not taking advantage of these lifesaving vaccinations.

The new schedule reviews the latest vaccination coverage rates.  We need to do better!

The new schedule also gives the latest NHIS (National Health Interview Survey) vaccination coverage data (from 2014).

Vaccine

Flu        > 19:  43.2%

Pneumococcal

19-64 at high risk:  20.3%

> 65  61.3%

Tdap      > 19:  20.1%

Zoster   > 60:  27.9%

Racial and ethnic disparities were also revealed.  Generally, whites have higher vaccination coverage rates than African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians.

These poor coverage rates show we need to increase awareness about vaccinations for health care providers and for patients.

Protect your patients; protect your family; protect yourself.  Get vaccinated!
